Review Dragon Age
Let me tell you about my experience with "Dragon Age: The Veilguard: The Official Game Guide." I went in with high hopes! I'm a huge fan of the Dragon Age series and own several official strategy guides for previous games. I expected a similar level of quality – detailed walkthroughs, helpful tips, and gorgeous visuals to aid in navigating the world of Thedas. Unfortunately, this guide fell significantly short of my expectations, primarily due to a glaring issue: the image quality.
The pictures, oh boy, the pictures. They are, without exaggeration, terrible. I've never seen anything like it in an official game guide before. Many images are blurry, almost completely indistinct, to the point of being utterly useless. I spent more time squinting at blurry black and white screenshots than actually using the guide for its intended purpose. This was incredibly frustrating, especially considering the detail promised in the description. The black and white format is also baffling; color images would have been immensely helpful in identifying items, enemies, and environments. It feels like a significant oversight, especially for a guide claiming to be "official."
Beyond the image issues, the guide itself isn't without its merits. The walkthrough is fairly comprehensive, covering the main storyline and a good number of side quests. The information regarding character builds, relationships, and combat strategies is helpful, providing solid advice for players of all skill levels. I appreciated the effort made to break down complex systems and offer clear explanations of choices and their consequences within the game's narrative. The sections on crafting and equipment are also useful, though I wish the lists of items and their locations were more thorough. A more detailed index would have been beneficial for quicker navigation, too.
However, the poor image quality overshadows many of the guide's positive attributes. It’s genuinely distracting and makes the entire experience far less enjoyable than it should be. It's a real shame, because with clearer visuals, this could have been a genuinely excellent guide. As it stands, it feels incomplete, almost like a rough draft released prematurely. While the information contained within is helpful, the presentation is severely lacking.
Compared to the Prima guides of the past, this one falls noticeably short. Those guides were landmarks of quality and detail. This guide aims for comprehensiveness, but the flawed presentation undermines its effectiveness. Ultimately, while I found some useful information within, the sheer frustration of constantly struggling to decipher blurry images made using this guide a chore rather than a help. Unless the image quality is drastically improved in future editions, I wouldn't recommend this guide to fellow Dragon Age enthusiasts. It's a case of potential squandered by poor execution.
